Chronic Pain

Chronic pain is a complex phenomenon. It is often difficult to treat, and there is rarely a clear explanation for why you hurt. With an out of control epidemic many physicians and patients are seeking other treatment options than dangerous and often ineffective opioid prescriptions. To properly treat chronic pain, which is maladaptive pain you must understand what exactly pain is, why you feel pain, when to push through the pain and when to stop, and most importantly you need to learn strategies to manage it for yourself. The research is clear: having people do things to you to manage your pain is not as effective as teaching you to do things for yourself to manage your pain.

Chronic pain is not a condition in your afflicted body part, it is in your nervous system, your brain, your muscles, your movement patterns - it is a whole-body affliction. I will teach you the nuts and bolts of pain - why you feel it, what it means, and when to listen to it or ignore it. Next I will develop an exercise program to improve your activity tolerance and build confidence, specifically targeted to your goals. I will likely perform manual therapy, but more importantly teach you self-help techniques so you are not reliant on your therapist for relief. Finally, I’ll discuss lifestyle changes to manage your pain in the long term.

Treating chronic pain is not easy, it is often not covered by insurance for traditional therapy providers. Because of my interest in pain and my experiences working in settings such as the burn unit and trauma ICU, I have come to realize pain is far more nuanced than the often simplistic and reductionist explanations would suggest. Concierge therapy allows me to create and implement exactly what chronic pain sufferers need: individualized pain management programs.
